Electronic Ambient duo from Castlebar release remarkable EP ‘The Maidens’

One good thing that these lockdowns have teaches  us is that musicians are eager to think outside of the box.

Over the past number of months since the world came to a standstill a lot of local acts have being creating a lot of interesting and diverse music.

After hearing the band’s debut album ‘Mew Island’ (which we highly recommend checking out) we we’re very keen to hear the  surprise new album from Irish Lights which  was made exclusively available  to us over the last few days. Irish Lights consist of Ben and Gordan who like to make experimental ambient music together. Ben is American and now married and living in Castlebar whilst Gordon lives in Detroit. Together they create music in different parts of the world. But yes we like to think that Gordon is also from Castlebar!!

Ambient duo from Castlebar release surprise second album ‘The Maidens’, It was written over lockdown and it is ambient instrumental music inspired by Irish Lighthouses. Each song title is a lighthouse somewhere on the island.

So yeah here we have ‘The Maidens”, the second full length album from Irish Lights.

This album is full of luscious ambient sounds. Irish Lights are willing to take a risk and understand the electronic ambient scene, especially on tracks such as ‘Crookhaven’ and St John’s (Killough)

You can tell that Irish Lights have studied there craft very well.

One half of the duo named Ben told me that there are influences from Chromatics to Air on this new album which is not a bad thing at all.

Although there are differences here from the bands debut effort, The Maidens is all is a lot more laid back. Most of the tracks are almost dream like but in a very good way.

So, if life seems pretty shitty right now, grab that glass of wine, turn on the new album from Irish Lights and forget the world around you.
